• Relevante HBO/WO opleiding (bijvoorbeeld richting industriële automatisering, proces technologie, meet- en regeltechniek, elektrotechniek )
• 5 – 10 jaar ervaring in process control (bij ingenieursburo of in procesindustrie)
• Aantoonbare ervaring met multidisciplinaire engineering projecten
• Kennis over de werking en programmering van PLC, DCS en SCADA systemen
• Ervaring met ontwikkeling van nieuwe processen en de opstart van nieuwe fabrieken is een pre

To achieve a breakthrough in the development of large-scale torrefaction, the management of Topell Energy decided in 2008 to set up a commercial-scale torrefaction plant. Currently, Topell Energy is building this commercial torrefaction plant in Duiven (The Netherlands), which will have a production capacity of 60,000 tons per annum. This plant is owned by Topell Nederland. Topell Nederland is owned by Topell Energy B.V. and , RWE Innogy GmbH, (the renewable arm and 100% subsidiary of the German utility group RWE AG), and the Dutch waste and energy company HVC.

The management team is supported by an experienced and knowledgeable Supervisory Board, whose members are well connected in the energy and clean tech world and have extensive experience in growing international businesses.

Figure A below shows a simple representation of the biomass-to-energy value chain. Topell Energy is an integrated technology provider to torrefaction plants. The torrefaction plant makes up for one important process step, torrefaction, in the production of torrefied biomass. Other important process steps are the preparation of biomass (including sizing and cleaning) before torrefaction takes place, and compacting (e.g. pelleting) after the biomass has been torrefied.

The offering of Topell Energy will include, but is not limited to:

• Front-end and Detailed Engineering of a Topell Energy Torrefaction System (‘TTS’);
• Delivery of key equipment, including Torbed^® reactors*, combustor, cyclones, heat exchangers, product cooling and process control system;
• Installation and commissioning of TTS.

Topell Energy has demonstrated the suitability of the Torbed^® reactor for torrefaction purposes in its torrefaction test facility. In order to test the reactor properties and to be able to deliver well-defined output specifications depending on the input material, a test reactor was commissioned in January 2009.

In addition to processing more than 800 samples successfully, the test reactor has provided the necessary data to optimize the equipment for the first commercial plant.

The test facility is currently based in the Gas-Wärme Institute in Essen (Germany).

The Torbed^® reactor consists of an empty cylindrical reactor chamber where a rotating and high-speed flow of process gas entrains the raw material, carrying it in suspension on a ‘bed’. This extremely turbulent environment creates a very intense contact between the hot process gas and the feed material, yielding a highly efficient and quick heat-to-mass transfer.

The Torbed^® reactor technology has several major advantages over other torrefaction technologies:

• High impact velocities provide quick and efficient heat and mass transfer;
• Accurate and rapid control of the reaction process, making the process easy to manage;
• A high velocity drop or gradient through the bed means that ungraded material (i.e. a broad range of particle sizes) can be processed;
• Contrary to other fluidized-bed technologies, the Torbed^® technology does not require a separate material to create the residential bed, because this is formed by the biomass itself;
• Process gas recirculation at high temperatures is simple due to a very low internal pressure drop, resulting in energy savings;
• Torbed^® reactors are driven completely by the displacement of process gas and there are no moving parts inside the reactor, which results in high performance capabilities and low maintenance costs;
• Torbed^® reactors are compact: the installations have the smallest footprint of all comparable technologies. This translates into a relatively low capital expenditure for a given output capacity.

These advantages make the Torbed^® reactor technology ideally suited for torrefaction process.

The Torbed^® reactor has been used successfully in many other applications ranging from snack and cereal processing to calcinations of catalyst support materials. To date, over 130 Torbed^® reactors have been installed, making the reactor a proven technology for various different applications.
