Topell Energy’s first commercial-scale torrefaction plant in The Netherlands
To achieve a breakthrough in the development of large-scale torrefaction, the management of Topell Energy decided in 2008 to set up a commercial-scale torrefaction plant. Currently, Topell Energy is building this commercial torrefaction plant in Duiven (The Netherlands), which will have a production capacity of 60,000 tons per annum. This plant is owned by Topell Nederland. Topell Nederland is owned jointly by Topell Energy B.V. and RWE Innogy GmbH, the renewable arm and 100% subsidiary of the German utility group RWE AG.
The construction was completed in December 2010. The commissioning of the plant started in Q1 2011. Topell Nederland expects to start production in the course of Q4 2011. A long-term contract for the supply of biomass has been closed with well-known Dutch biomass supplier Bruins & Kwast, and a long-term contract for the off-take of torrefied pellets has been closed with the Dutch utility company Essent.
