History

Topell Energy, incorporated on 31 December 2009 was created through the merger of 3 precursors:

  • Topell B.V. (‘Topell’), founded in May 2008. From the start Topell has focused on torrefaction. Topell invested in the current Topell Energy test reactor. Topell engineered the large-scale, commercial torrefaction plant currently built by Topell Energy, secured sufficient financing for the construction of the plant, obtained all necessary permits for the plant, and arranged for long-term feedstock and sales contracts;
  • Polow Energy Systems B.V. (‘Polow’), incorporated in 1987, an engineering company with a deep knowledge of and experience with the Torbed® reactor. Polow has, among others, supplied and installed a Torbed® reactor used for the gasification of biomass, at a Dutch plant near the town of Vlissingen (Flushing), in the south-western Netherlands. The gas produced by the installation is combusted to create heat which in turn is used for an industrial drying process;
  • Torrefaction IP B.V. (‘TIP’), incorporated in May 2008, a spin-off from Polow and Polow’s intellectual property.

Founders and RWE Innogy Venture Capital are shareholders of Topell Energy. RWE Innogy Venture Capital owns approximately 39% of the shares in the company today.

Topell Energy is a member of the Dutch Torrefaction Association (DTA).
